In 2003, Philip Boehm met with co-founding board members Virginia Braxs and Sam Fiorello to establish a professional theater in St. Louis with an international outlook. Two years later our kickoff Soul of a Clone made what the Post-Dispatch called a “terrific first impression” and was designated a Critic’s Choice by the Chicago Reader when invited to that city. Since then we have staged nine seasons of plays by authors from Cuba to Croatia, including nearly twenty US or world premieres, to consistent critical acclaim and assorted honors.
Thanks to the support of numerous private foundations, public agencies, and individual donors, we have been established a theater widely recognized as unique in St. Louis and rare in the entire country. We operate under a full contract with Actors’ Equity Association, and are members of the national consortium Theatre Communications Group. Our creative collective draws on highly experienced artists from many disciplines, and reflects the rich diversity of backgrounds and cultures found in St. Louis.
Consistent innovation, international perspective, and a tight focus on our mission “to move you, and move you to think” are the hallmarks of Upstream Theater.
