PRESS RELEASE
For immediate release
September 12, 2005

Upstream Theater is pleased to announce the US premiere of HELEN’S NECKLACE by award-winning Quebecois playwright Carole Fréchette, translated by John Murrell and directed by Philip Boehm. The deceptively simple script shows a woman from North America who has traveled to an unnamed Arab city scarred by recent conflict, where her search for a missing necklace becomes an intense journey of discovery. Subtle, timely and powerful, HELEN’S NECKLACE takes us on a poetic voyage of our own, to a place we hear so much about but know so little, and where loss is measured in a different magnitude.

We are a professional company dedicated to bringing an international perspective to local theater, and this fall we are honored and excited to be the first theater in the United States to present a writer as important as Carole Fréchette. And how appropriate for St. Louis to host this premiere, given our long ties to French-speaking Canada, which began with Marquette and Joliette and remain very active to this day. (Did you know that Canada is by far Missouri’s leading foreign market absorbing over 40% of our exports, more than the state’s next fourteen foreign trading partners together?) Now we can follow another intrepid Canadian as she leads us on an exploration of a completely different part of the world...

Performances will run September 23-25 and September 29-October 2 at New City School at 5209 Waterman Blvd. in the Central West End. Thurs-Sat at 8 PM and Sundays at 3 PM. Starring Jane Paradise, Don McClendon, and Ayse Eren, with live music by Farshid Soltanshahi.

The author will be in attendance at the opening.

Tickets are $18 general admission; $12 students/seniors. Group discounts available. For reservations call 314-863-4999 or 314-863-0570 or email us at upstreamtheater@sbcglobal.net. For further information and directions please visit www.upstreamtheater.org.
